SEASON 5 GAG REEL ONLINE

credit: buddytv.com

Our good friends at BuddyTV posted this article today. The gag reel from the fifth season of 'One Tree Hill' DVD's which hits stores next a week from today!

Who doesn't love a good gag reel?  Even though I've watched actors cracking up as they flub their lines on seemingly hundreds of different DVDs, I never tire of seeing my favorite stars act like real people.  There's something about a good gag reel that makes you feel like you're right there on the set watching the magic happen.  It's a bit strange to see someone like Kiefer Sutherland break character as he collapses into giggles while filming 24, but that's what makes it so entertaining.  Gag reels help to remind us that actors are real people, and they make mistakes just like the rest of us

Season 5 of One Tree Hill comes to DVD on August 26, but the gag reel has already shown up on YouTube.  Read on to check it out.

There are plenty of highlights to be found in the four and a half minutes of footage, including: Bethany Joy Galeotti making K-Fed fall on the floor by spouting some profanity, lots of tongue action from various actors, Jackson Brundage dancing, Haley flirting with Dan, Paul Johansson rolling a wheelchair into a pool, James Lafferty getting slapped numerous times, and Chad Michael Murray failing to successfully shoot a basket.  Who knew Lucas had such shoddy aim?

You can check out all the shenanigans below:

The gag reel is just one of the bonus features found on the One Tree Hill season 5 DVD set.  The set also includes interviews with the cast and crew discussing the show's fast forward, a special look at the 100th episode, commentary on two episodes, and a featurette highlighting musical guest stars like Kevin Federline and Kate Voegele.  Hopefully the DVDs will tide fans over until season 6 of One Tree Hill premiere on September 1.

SEASON 6 TO BE THE FINAL SEASON

credit: curlyhead/Fan Forum
According to a network source, the CW has ordered 23 episodes of OTH for season six. Also, this source has reported that this will be OTH's last season, much to the displeasure of the CW

credit: nine/TWOP Forum:
The network tried to offer Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray a ton of money to stay for another season (S7) but they both turned the offer down. I dont know if the rest of the cast was made an offer and turned it down but the two I mentioned did at least.

When The CW makes their official announcement, we will post it. I always imagined season 6 to be the final season. This is truly a sad day for 'One Tree Hill' fans

CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY WRITING 'NOIR-THEMED' EPISODE (BUDDY-TV)

There are few film genres that I love more than noir, which was all the rage in Hollywood throughout the '40s and '50s.  The films are usually shot in black and white, and often contain flashbacks, voiceovers, cynical men and dangerous femme fatales.  As much as I love the noir style, it can often be a disaster when television shows adopt it for very special episodes.  Smallville and Charmed both tried to pull off the hardboiled dialogue and beautiful black and white cinematography, but the less mentioned about those episodes the better.

While being interviewed by The CW Source at the Teen Choice Awards, Chad Michael Murray revealed that the episode of One Tree Hill he's scripting will be noir-themed.  Will it be an interesting departure for the show or an absolute train wreck?

"We actually have a really great season this year," Murray said when asked about what's coming up for the One Tree Hill gang.  "Things have been heating up, we've killed a couple people, and I wrote an episode this year, actually.  I wrote a black and white '30s film noir piece.  It's kind of Casablanca meets Dick Tracy, and Mark [Schwahn] really loved it.  I took all six years [of the show] and kind of incorporated different aspects of it, then set it in the '30s."

Murray also revealed that his episode, which starts shooting in October, will likely be the thirteenth of the season.  The actor is also hoping to step behind the camera to direct an installment sometime this year.

Before I start to ponder what a '30s-style One Tree Hill episode will be like, I have to wonder whether Murray was serious when mentioning the deaths of a couple characters.  It's the type of comment that could have been a throwaway joke, or he could have been completely serious.  If he in fact wasn't being facetious, then which members of the OTH gang will be meeting their ends?  Dan better not be included, or else I'll be protesting in the streets.

As for the noir-themed OTH episode, I honestly don't know what to think about it.  Murray has never written an episode before, so it's impossible to predict how the installment will turn out.  I can certainly picture Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and Brooke (Sophia Bush) in vintage '30s garb, and it's not difficult to think of Mouth (Lee Norris) as a nosy reporter, but what will the plot consist of?  Will the whole thing be a dream sequence?  Will it be an excerpt from Lucas's next novel?  We'll have to wait and see.

One Tree Hill season 6 premieres on the CW on September 1.

MYSPACE LAUNCHES FIRST MUSIC TOUR

by Frank Meyer

MySpace’s music label, the creatively titled MySpace Records, is launching its first national tour. Singer/songwriter Kate Voegele is the first artist to score a headlining tour sponsored by the popular social networking site.

Dubbed the "Back 2 School" tour, and cosponsored with the University of Phoenix, where Voegele  is a psychology major, the trek will span 40-dates in North American trek, and launches Friday, Aug. 8 at the Glass House in Pomona, Calif.

"It's all wrapped up in this bigger ad package sold by MySpace," MySpace Records GM J Scavo told Billboard. "The centerpiece is the media that's running on myspace.com, which drives traffic to this co-branded page."

As part of the sponsorship, the 21-year-old singer will chronicle her touring experience via blogs and video diaries on myspace.com/kateontour. Voegele will also upload behind-the-scenes footage from the tour, post bulletin updates and maintain the site's "Ask Kate" forum.

"The MySpace sales staff feels embolden now to go offer these far more complex and integrated packages to advertisers," Scavo added. "If we can keep doing this, it adds awareness and creates some support for our efforts as a label."

Voegele launched her career on prime-time teen soap One Tree Hill, is touring in support of her debut album Don't Look Away.

Oh…and she’s cute…

3 QUESTIONS WITH SOPHIA BUSH AT TEEN CHOICE '08

by Lynn Barker

Presenter Sophia Bush, in a long, gorgeous watered silk flower print dress chatted a bit:

Q: What's the one thing about high school you are glad you don't have to do again?

Sophia: I don't have to stay up all night writing papers anymore but I miss school though.

Q: What do you think is a big issue teens have to face today?

Sophia: There are so many. They attack celebrities on blogs and teenagers are attacking each other on MySpace. There is so much negativity around, especially for young women. They're so competitive. You just hope they'll learn to love themselves for what they are. Embrace yourself. I'd like to see press outlets doing stories on women of all types. We all have different goals, passions and dreams and you need examples.

Q: What could you just not be without?

Sophia: It's difficult when I'm traveling but if I'm going to be gone for a long time, I would never leave home without my dog. I'm away from him for four days and I'm dying to see him.

CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY BACKSTAGE AT TEEN CHOICE '08

Chad Michael Murray of "One Tree Hill" who won for "Choice TV Actor: Drama" looked like his surf board was an easy carry and had some solid advice for teens.

Q: What problems do teens face today?

Chad: I think they have a lot less respect for their parents to be honest. I think that needs to be addressed. I would want them, next time their parents ask them to do the dishes, do their homework, mow the lawn don't make them ask you twice. When you get home tonight, just go and give mom and dad a big hug and a kiss and it'll go a lot farther. There are a lot of big issues going on in the world that we know about, the environment and who's going to be the next President. Let's think about the basics first and I think it's going to start with the kids.

Chad gushed that his current girlfriend/fianc? Kenzie Dalton, a former crew member on "One Tree Hill", makes him laugh and is the first girl he's dated who has really done so. "It's not that she's just pretty or anything, she's my bud! She supports me. Hey, all the girls out there who think being funny is not sexy, you're wrong! I think the best relationship is with someone who is your best friend. We are just goofballs together and I love that".

Q: Where are you going to put your surfboard award?

Chad: I actually have a spot for it on the wall in my office. It's been calling to me. It's kind of naked right now. That's where it's going to go.

Q: What would you never leave home without?

Chad: I've got a necklace around my neck that my lady gave me. I try not to leave home without that and my wit.

Q: How is Miley doing tonight?

Chad: I think she's rocking it! I've never met her. You hear about her everywhere you go. That girl has energy to spare. She's doing a great job tonight. She should be proud of herself when it's over.

"NO SEX PLEASE, THEY'RE TEENAGERS..." (guardian.co.uk)

Rather than getting their knickers in a twist over saucy ads for Gossip Girl, the US media should worry about the unfair portrayal of sex and morality on TV.

The US media is having a collective hot flush over some supposedly scandalous advertisements for season two of teen drama Gossip Girl. The ads have so far brought the show the kind of publicity producers have wet dreams about.

But the posters really aren't that big a deal: Yes, they show teenagers kissing and hint at sexual relations to come. Yes, kids watch the show, and yes, they will see some depictions of sex, but it's all pretty PG and the characters involved are all over 18.

The real reason everyone's so worked up is a puritanical attitude, common in the American media, which decrees that Good Girls Don't. (Have sex, that is.) And if they do, they shouldn't enjoy it. And if they do, they must be punished. It's a double standard: the first episode of Gossip Girl showed a male character try to force sex with two girls, and yet he ended the series a hero. Meanwhile, the girls who had sex with more than one guy experienced guilt and ostracisation in addiction to being dumped. In TV-land, then, betrayal is worse than rape.

This warped attitude to young women's sexuality can be seen in every teen drama to hit the small screen. Tori Spelling's Beverly Hills 90210 character Donna wasn't allowed to have sex until she was in her early twenties because Tori's producer father Aaron was scared of ruining her real-life reputation. In My So-Called Life, the girls who had sex, Rayanne and Sharon, had to deal with serious family problems that virginal Angela escaped. And you might say that one of the reasons Lauren Conrad was chosen to front her own spin-off (the clearly staged but nonetheless brilliant "reality show" The Hills) over her Laguna Beach co-star and arch rival Kristen was because the latter was a good-time girl with far too many boys' numbers in her BlackBerry.

But no teen programme has ever taken the threat of young women's sexuality more seriously than that ode to longwinded angst-ing, Dawson's Creek. Not only did Andie get dumped after losing her virginity and Gretchen lose her baby and her place at college after considering abortion for a nanosecond, but the only two girls who had a healthy attitude to sex got killed off. That'll teach them.

Young men, meanwhile, get to have the time of their lives on TV, simply by not having a uterus. Super stud Pacey Witter made it out of Capeside alive while Lucas Scott remains an idol in One Tree Hill, no matter how many girls he messes around. Gossip Girl's Chuck Bass will never really be reprimanded for being a lying, cheating, wannabe rapist... whereas his female counterpart is currently suffering an extreme rehab regime. I guess equal opportunity castigation would be too much of a drag for the mostly male producers of these shows.

So instead of getting worked up about some ultimately harmless advertisements that won't shock anyone who's started puberty, perhaps we should all be concerned that teen TV is encouraging young people to develop some unhealthy and gender-biased beliefs about the link between sex and morality.

After all, that's much more disturbing than a few pretty posters...

"KATE VOEGELE MAPS BIG SUMMER HEADLINING RUN..."

by Tjames Madison

Singer/songwriter/actress Kate Voegele [ tickets ] has mapped an extensive headlining tour this summer as she continues to support her debut album, last year's "Don't Look Away."

The 21-year-old performer--who completed a seven-episode run on the teen drama "One Tree Hill" earlier this year--will kick off the outing Aug. 8 in Pomona, CA. The University of Phoenix-sponsored trek is schedule to hit more than 40 cities through early October. Dates are below.

"Don't Look Away," released in May of last year (and re-released in January with three additional tracks) was the singer's debut for MySpace Records. In 2006, Voegele became the first performer signed to the fledgling label, which features artists who got their first widespread exposure through appearing on the popular social networking service.

"MySpace was on board two years before 'One Tree Hill' ever came about," Voegele recently told LiveDaily. "They believed in me from the beginning. Without them and my management--everybody on my whole team--I think it would be impossible to be where I am now. That's probably been one of the greatest milestones in my career."

The singer also claimed she has already written enough original material for 10 studio albums.

"I have so much stuff," she said. "As an artist, I'm always writing because I'm always inspired by everything that's going on around me. I'm having all these amazing experiences, now that I'm on tour and meeting people and hanging out with everybody and seeing new places; it's incredibly inspirational. I'm always writing. SOPHIA BUSH SHOWS STYLE AT 2008 ESPY AWARDS

Actress Sophia Bush was a figure of grace walking the red carpet dressed in herone- shouldered bronze Fendi gown at the 16th Annual ESPY Awards at Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, July 16, 2008.

Sophia, 26, wore a floor length satin gown with a long side slit and cinched at the waist with a black leather belt. She accessorized with a sparkling cream color clutch, black Jimmy Choo peep toe heels, diamond shaped Anthony Nak gold earrings and wavy gold bangle bracelet on her left arm. Her brown colored hair swept up and tied in a bun looked elegant but seemed to add age to her face.

Sophia was rumored to have dated Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo in late 2007 when they were seen together in Texas. In December 2007 she was reported to be dating James Lafferty but her rep denied the report. Recent photos of Lafferty and Bush together at LAX airport in Los Angeles have renewed past speculations.

In February 2008, Sophia made several appearances in Texas in support of the Barack Obama campaign and was later joined in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Waco by fellow actor Adam Rodriguez.

Sophia will be next seen in The Narrow, an independent film starring Kevin Zegers, Vincent D'Onofrio, Eddie Cahill and Monica Keena.

Established in 1993, the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Awards is an annual sports awards event created and broadcast by American cable television network ESPN. The ceremony is to honor individual and team athletic and other sports-related achievements during the past year. This year the ceremony was hosted by Justin Timberlake and will air on July 20.

Celebrities attending the event included David and Victoria Beckham - who were invited as award presenters, Adriana Lima, Kate Walsh and Zac Efron among others.

'ONE TREE HILL' STARS STEP BEHIND THE SCENES

The longer a television show stays on the air the more likely it is that the cast will get involved behind the scenes.  Starring on a hit TV series is great training to learn more about the business, which is why we've seen actors like Tom Welling (Smallville) and Paul Johansson (One Tree Hill) direct episodes of their respective series.  There's no better place to practice your craft and test out your skills in front of millions of people.

Following in the footsteps of Johansson, TV Guide is reporting that two other stars from One Tree Hill will be doing work behind the scenes when the show returns for its sixth season.

Chad Michael Murray is taking on the more arduous task, as he'll be taking a cue from Lucas Scott and doing some major writing.  The actor is set to pen an episode late in the season, and though we have no idea what it will be about or when it'll air, it should be interesting to see what Murray comes up with.  Will he give his character extra screen time and Emmy-worthy emotional moments?  Will he successfully capture the voices of the characters in the same way creator Mark Schwahn does?  We'll have to wait and see.

While Murray is busy writing for the characters, Bethany Joy Galeotti will step up to direct the actors for one episode.  Aside from Johansson, who regularly directs installments of the series, Moira Kelly (Karen Scott) has also helmed a couple episodes.  It's likely that Haley won't feature much in the installment directed by Galeotti, as it's usually tough to be behind the camera and in front of it at the same time.

Fans can look forward to seeing what their favorite actors can do behind the scenes when One Tree Hill season 6 kicks off on September 1.

SOPHIA BUSH READY TO CHALLENGE SCARLETT JOHANSSON FOR BARAK

By Angela Carson

What will Michelle Obama think about this one?  Will this be a Hollywood catfight?  Much ado was made when it was leaked out that A-list buxom actress Scarlett Johansson of the "Yes, we can" video reportedly had the private e-mail address of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. Scarlett Johansson might now have some competition from pint-sized hottie Sophia Bush of "One Tree Hill" fame.

When asked by OK! Magazine recently, "Are you dating anyone now," the stunning little brunette told the magazine, "The only two men I have time for are Barack Obama and my trainer!  Those are the closest I come to relationships."  How many of the Hollywood babes will be chasing after Obama if he wins the White House?

Obama tried to calm down the whole Marilyn Monroe - John F Kennedy comparisons that were already picking up steam by calling it a misunderstanding and blaming his assistant, a man named Reggie Love for what he deemed as an electronic mix up.  Obama claimed it was only one "thank-you" e-mail and then it was blown out of proportion.

Now with the crush that Sophia Bush has on Barack Obama will we be looking at another Bill Clinton type Hollywood infatuation with the Commander in Chief only with younger and prettier actresses?

BELIEFNET.COM INTERVIEW WITH HILARIE BURTON

By Paul O'Donnell

Hilarie Burton is only a little older than 22-year-old Peyton Sawyer, her character on the teen drama "One Tree Hill," but in conversation, Burton speaks with a wisdom, and a vision for her future, that would be a credit to someone much older—those she still calls "grownups." Chalk it up to her early start in show-business—at an age when most kids are watching the clock in Calculus, Burton was already a VJ on MTV. Or to running your own film production company while starring in films like the Christian thriller "The List," just out on DVD, and the upcoming screen version of Sue Monk Kidd's "Secret Life of Bees." Burton herself might say her taking the long view has to do with her Southern upbringing, and her belief in God.

For someone with a big role on a hit TV series, "The List" might be called an unusual project. What convinced you to sign onto a Christian indie film?

Partly I wanted to play Jo Johnston for my fans who know me from "One Tree Hill." My character on the show does some things I would not recommend. So it was nice to play someone closer to who I am. And for me, it was important because, growing up, you never saw Christian ladies in movies or on TV. Even today, when you read Christian stories or you watch Christian movies, the characters don't talk like normal people. They don't use slang. They're very formal. It was great to play a contemporary Christian and have her not be a geek. It's almost taboo. Playing a Christian woman is so much weirder than playing a drug addict or a friendly prostitute or any of those things.

Did you know that it was a Christian film when you read for it?

I did. I grew up in the United Methodist Church, and church was always a very big part of my growing up. After leaving my hometown, it became very hard to find a--I don't want to say a religious community, but a spiritual community. It wasn't until I worked on this film that I really met like-minded people. And to find a group of people who were working within the business, and also playing by their own rules and very successfully, it was very inspiring for me. Gary [Wheeler, director of "The List"] inspired me to start my own production company down here in Wilmington, which we call Southern Gothic, and we've already started on our first project, a dark comedy that's very human, along the lines of "Little Miss Sunshine" or "Juno," about a young guy who gets cancer.

Do you feel like it's easier to be open about having a life of faith in show-business?

Well, it's easier for me because I live and work in Wilmington, N.C., in a very family-oriented film community. That's not to say that, if I went out to Hollywood, I'd be bashful about my convictions. I've always been very vocal about my religion. It's a big part of who I am. I remember being told that part of your job as a Christian is testifying to that. You could be Christian all you want, but if you hide out in your room and keep it a secret, what good does that do God? I mean, it's a hard path to figure out, because you don't want to throw it in peoples' face. But I want the kids who watch "One Tree Hill" to know that it's all pretend, and that the person at the core of that character values morals, honor and things like that. You want to inspire them to look beyond what is superficial and try to find that greater thing.

The South—its uniqueness and traditions—play a big part in "The List." And it seems to be a theme with you. You were raised in Virginia—was it that kind of old South milieu?

I'm from northern Virginia, but I grew up next to the West Virginia border, so it was hills and farmland. We had that sense of adventure you get from growing up around old farmhouses and lazy, rolling hills, you know? That's something that translates into "The List," that love of what's ancient. It's funny, though: I was the southern kid on the set, but my character was the only one that wasn't from the South.

KEEPING THE FAITH WITH 'ONE TREE HILL'S' HILARIE BURTON

By Troy Rogers

In a day and age when the world is infatuated with the scandalous side of celebrity and the misadventures of some of today's young female stars, One Tree Hill actress Hilarie Burton is a breath of fresh air. In fact, she's living proof that rising female stars can provide hope to those in need within their own generation through strength and positive messages. Although TV fans know Burton as the brooding and artistic teen harlot, Peyton Sawyer, on One Tree Hill, Hilarie recently got the chance to show a completely different side of herself next to Malcolm McDowell and Chuck Carrington in the southern faith based thriller, The List, which is now available on DVD (as of June 10).

Much like her character in The List, Hilarie Burton found herself on a journey of exploration that allowed her to reaffirm her own faith and belief in a higher power. On Monday, Hilarie phoned in to The Deadbolt HQ to talk about her time on The List, her views on faith and what it means to be a Christian girl in Hollywood, how she navigates the real world evils of the industry, how she's different than her character on One Tree Hill, her USO tour of Guantanamo Bay ... AND, whether Dan will be returning to the series and if we should all have faith that Peyton Sawyer could be making wedding plans this season.

THE DEADBOLT: So I guess the best question to start with is, did you have faith The List would finally be released on DVD?

HILARIE BURTON: Oh yeah, that was never a question. Gary Wheeler is so good at his job. Not only is he a phenomenal on-set leader, but he understands how to maintain his integrity and his ethics in a business that can be kind of seedy. So I think anybody who meets him and encounters him automatically recognizes that. So I never doubted for a second that he wouldn’t go out there and sell this movie.

THE DEADBOLT: Is it tough to be one of the 50 Sexiest Women and still be religious?

BURTON: [laughs] What? Where did that come from? I didn’t know about that. Is that your own personal list?

THE DEADBOLT: No, but you’ve been on a few.

BURTON: A couple of them - sexy is as sexy does. I think I went through a very awkward stage growing up. I had three brothers and every girl likes to say she’s a tomboy because they think that’s what boys like to hear. I was painfully tomboyish for awhile and it wasn’t something to brag about [laughs]. So I think once you’ve experienced that level of awkwardness, any kind of accolade about your physical appearance is always just kind of unsettling. So I don’t pay attention to that.

THE DEADBOLT: I guess it would be kind of weird.

BURTON: Yeah, it’s totally weird. I met a guy from Europe recently that was talking about how gorgeous women were - gorgeous, gorgeous - and I was like, "Listen buddy, here in the States woman don’t want to hear they’re pretty. Every once in a while, maybe, but American women like to hear they’re capable and really smart. That’s what keeps us going. Tell me how smart I am." [laughs]

THE DEADBOLT: So what was it exactly that spoke to you about The List?

BURTON: For me it was the opportunity to play a Christian woman that wasn’t a geek. There’s that stereotype that the bible-toting Christian woman is a dork, and that’s a stereotype I grew up with and never really agreed with, and so I was very excited about the opportunity to show a different side to my fan base. I’ve got impressionable teenage girls who watch One Tree Hill and I wanted them to know you can be cool and still be devout and still be strong in your faith, and you don’t have to keep it a secret either. People are like, "Wow, you’re pretty vocal about your faith." And I’m like, "Yeah, well, that’s part of it. That’s part of being a Christian, you have to announce it." It’s not a secret.

THE DEADBOLT: Since there's such a strong sense of faith in the film, why do you think it's so strong in the south?

BURTON: I don’t know that it’s stronger in the south. My mother’s family comes from Iowa and Minnesota and they’re some of the most devout people and their entire communities are super devout. I think, given the climate and how warm it is, people get out and mingle more. So maybe there are more arenas to get out and talk about it, to go to church. I think church in the south is - it’s our history, our tradition, it’s where we go to see our neighbors. That’s not to say that that’s all entirely wholesome, half the time you’re just there to check out other people’s outfits. But I think it’s so ingrained in the southern culture that there are just more arenas to talk about it perhaps.

THE DEADBOLT: When connecting to your character, Jo, were you faced with a similar questioning process of understanding her in the same way she had to understand her own future?

BURTON: I think for me, in playing the part of Jo, a large part of it was that I’ve been playing a character on One Tree Hill that I, as a younger person, did have a lot in common with. Peyton Sawyer was very similar to how I was in high school. So being able to play someone closer to me was important. And I also wasn’t lost, but searching for a way to use the leverage I gained on One Tree Hill for good, you know. I mean, you can go to all of the fashion shows you want, go to all of the parties, and get in all of the magazines and take pictures, you can do that all you want, but unless you’re using your status for good it’s kind of pointless. So getting to play Jo, I knew that it was going to bring my fan base to an entirely different genre, which was important to me. But also, I knew I was going to have an opportunity to do things like this, like promote the film and be asked about my faith. When I do stuff for One Tree Hill, I don’t get posed those types of questions. If I’m going to share any part of my personal life with my public, I think attesting to my faith and what I believe in is probably one of the only valid things I should be sharing. ...READ FULL INTERVIEW

SOPHIA BUSH WAS NOT READY FOR MARRIAGE

Sophia Bush finally spoke out about her split from fellow actor Jon Foster.

The 25-year-old One Tree Hill star told Us Weekly Monday that she and Foster “broke up, like, a year ago… I am single. We are really good friends. We keep in touch, and we love each other to death… You can love somebody, and not be in love with them, and I think that was a really valuable lesson. We weren’t ready to get married, but it definitely doesn’t mean we don’t care about each other.”

The actress, who had a 20-month-long marriage to costar Chad Michael Murray, added, “The only two men I have time for are Barack Obama and my trainer. So those are my relationships… I love that [Obama] is the first politician who doesn’t feel like a politician. Senator Obama is the one person who’s saying, ‘We can change everything — but it can’t just be me, and it can’t just be you.’”

SINGER GETS BOOST FROM STINT ON 'ONE TREE HILL'

By Kristie Rearick
krearick@sjnewsco.com

Kate Voegele has had quite a whirlwind of a year. The singer/songwriter from Cleveland, Ohio has found musical success at only 21 years old. From appearing on the hit CW TV show "One Tree Hill" as a singer to hearing her songs played on such shows as "Ghost Whisperer" and MTV's "The Hills," this young star has been on a "cool adventure," so far.

"It's been an insane year," Voegele said in a phone conversation from Cincinnati where she was preparing for a live performance. "I've been all over the place ... sometimes I get to a place and I say 'Oh my God, where am I?'"

The talented singer always had an interest in music growing up. Her father played the guitar and influenced her to pick it up as well.

"I grew up in a musical family, so I was exposed to all that stuff when I was little kid. I started playing guitar when I was a freshman in high school .. but it took me a while to decide to do this as a career. At first I was just doing it for fun," Voegele said.

Voegele was named an "An Artist to Watch in 2008" by Billboard. Her debut album, "Don't Look Away," had a huge increase in sales after her guest appearance on One Tree Hill where she sang some of the songs from the album. She will be performing -- in support of her album, Don't Look Away -- at The Fillmore at TLA in Philadelphia on Monday, June 16 with British pop singer Natasha Bedingfield and The Veronicas.
Voegele didn't think she would get the part on One Tree Hill. She went into the audition thinking it was a long shot at best.

"I never had any professional acting experience," Voegele said. "I sang at the audition and read my lines. When I was finished they said 'Kate, you could do this for a living, you know.' I thought that was pretty awesome."

The show gave her the exposure she needed and she describes it as a great experience. She enjoyed working on the show and felt welcome by the cast and crew right away. Voegele played Mia, a young artist not unlike herself trying to make it in the music business.

"She was such a great character to play. I think the audience really identified with her," Voegele said.

With so many things going on in her musical career, Voegele had to put college on hold for a while, but recently she decided to study online with the University of Phoenix to get a degree in psychology.

"I went to college for two years and I had to stop because of my career. I was kind of bummed out about it because I love studying and going to school," Voegele said. "This school makes it flexible to be a student. I'm able to work around my schedule."

The singer, who writes all of her own songs, was influenced by singers Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow early on because of the "intelligently written words" in their music.

"Listening to them made me want to write that kind of music ... mainstream music with a lot of heart. I think it's really important to have words that people can really relate to," Voegele said.

And what's next for this talented musician after her amazing, breakthrough year?
"I will always mainly be a musician ... I can't picture not doing it," she said. "But if something else came up in the acting world I would definitely do it again."

If you go: Kate Voegele will perform at the Fillmore at the TLA on 334 South Street at 8 p.m. in Philadelphia with Natasha Bedingfield and The Veronicas. Tickets are $25. For tickets visit www.livenation.com

KATE VOEGELE MUSIC REVIEW

By HENRY LINDER, McCaskey

I'll admit it: I have mixed feelings about Kate Voegele. Kate Voegele is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist from Bay Village, Ohio. "Don't Look Away," was released in May 2007 and re-released in January on MySpace Records. Her first and only album, "Don't Look Away," was released in May 2007 and re-released in January on MySpace Records, in addition to a special iTunes exclusive release in May.

A PR company press release describes Voegele as a "singer/songwriter" with "something truly distinctive to offer."

I must say, I'm impressed by the concept of Voegele being signed by MySpace Records, because of its implications: It suggests she has talent appreciated not just by music producers sitting in cushy chairs, trying to decide on the next big thing, but also by the listeners of music.

In other words, Voegele seems to have appeal to actual people, who've made her popular enough to be signed, so there must be a significant number of people who enjoy her music. (She may also be gaining that fan base after appearing in the role of Mia on The CW's "One Tree Hill.")

It's quite a feat (which is an understatement) to become popular through a social-networking site, and it's entirely plausible that you will disagree with me about Voegele's music.

Still, despite the hype about the music (which can be heard on myspace.com/katevoegele and bought on iTunes) and her evident popularity, I'm not a huge fan.

There's no denying Voegele's talent: She has a powerful voice, and the music on the album is tight and professional. (It's hard to tell who plays what on the CD — Voegele plays piano and guitar in addition to singing, but she also has a backup band comprised of bass, guitar and a slew of other instruments.)

"Don't Look Away" starts with "Chicago," which begins with a guitar melody, joined shortly by Voegele's vocals.

The music is sincere, but it gets mildly formulaic: Much of the rest of the album starts off with a lonely melody, then flows into vocals that build to a chorus before backing off for more verse.

Voegele's voice is the driver behind her music: The melodies, while at times catchy (such as on "Might Have Been," which features a memorable guitar opening and backing), can also blend together into an indistinguishable mush of background noise. "Facing Up," for instance, is driven almost entirely by Voegele's voice, with backing guitar and piano that require effort to notice.

Frankly, my two biggest criticisms are weak: The music doesn't sound very original, and it just doesn't grab me. Voegele is talented, but she's not doing anything special on her album.

The latter criticism may be due to preference on my part. I've never found myself drawn to music from Voegele's genre. And this is where the mixed feelings I mentioned at the beginning of this review come in: Knowing that Voegele is popular for reasons other than manipulation of audiences by record labels, and given her obvious and impressive talent, I have trouble writing off Voegele's music completely.

The songs are thoughtful, and I found myself liking songs like "Devil In Me," which is fun to listen to and features a pop chorus and guitars, or the fast-paced "One Way Or Another," which showcases Voegele's vocal power and features a wide range of instruments that work together to build up the song into a complete piece.

My recommendation is that you check out Voegele for yourself. The genres she blends are eclectic and far-reaching, and she's a talented musician.

I would recommend either buying some of her tracks or seeing her live — she's coming to Chameleon Club June 19.
